Mold Contractor Scams in New Jersey & Philadelphia
We hear about this type of scam far too often in our industry. Unfortunately, there
are con artists and bad people in every profession -
In a nut shell, there are none. That’s right.… none. Surprised?
In New Jersey (a state that regulates almost everything), there are no regulatory
standards for mold remediation. Why? I don’t know – my guess is that it’s probably
too expensive to regulate at the State level. There are however, professional guidelines
that reputable mold remediation companies follow when removing mold from your home
or business. (IICRC S520, New York City guidelines and OSHA’s guidelines for mold
remediation). These guidelines are in place to ensure that mold is being removed
safely and properly and not just covered up or “treated” with miracle mold-
One of the most commonly asked questions I get from clients are: “Do you do free
inspections?” And although I would love to respond with: “No – do you offer your
professional services for free?” – I refrain and try my best to educate them. This
is an industry-
Any mold inspector who has received certification and undergone lengthy on-
“Well can’t you just come out and look?”
My answer: “Of course, when would you like to schedule your mold inspection?”
“Well how much is that going to cost?” or “That sounds expensive. How much is that?”
“Why so much for a mold inspection?” Sometimes, no matter how sick they are from suspected mold, or how concerned they claim to be about mold – they have the “If it ain’t free, it ain’t for me” mentality, and there’s nothing we can do for them.
The bottom line is that we as mold professionals cannot properly assess a mold and/or
moisture issue without doing a visual inspection and using the proper equipment.
And as long as companies continue to dilute the value of actual mold inspections
in order to sell mold jobs, we will have an uphill battle on our hands. Education
here is key.
What can you do to avoid the scams?
Take the time and do your research on companies you are considering. Remember – they
are not cleaning up dirt or dust. They’ll be dealing with a biohazard that -
Ask for references – and call them!
Don’t simply trust what you read. Any company can make up testimonials from clients
that don’t exist. Ask for references with phone numbers – and call them! Ask if you
can see their work, even if it’s just through pictures. Ask if they were courteous
and professional, and wore uniforms and arrived in marked vehicles.
Avoid home improvement contractors and waterproofing companies.
I generally avoid saying anything bad about “professionals” – but in this case, I’ll
make an exception. There are good and bad home improvement and waterproofing contractors
just like mold contractors. The problem is that many do not have the training, equipment,
certification or proper insurance to handle bio hazardous clean up. On average, we
clean up other contractor‘s messes 4 times per month. They know a little bit about
a lot of things – and that equals trouble. Waterproofing companies almost all offer
mold remediation these days. Obviously some may actually care about and know what
they are doing -
I could go on and on – but I’ll spare you all the torture. Just know that there are great mold remediation companies out there who care about helping people out of potentially hazardous mold situations. Sometimes, you just have to look a little harder to find them.
